How the score is built

Thai Haze Risk answers one question: over several seasons, which zones of northern Thailand are least affected by agricultural burning? It is not a real-time air quality app. For today's readings, use a live sensor network.

All zone geometry is sampled on a point grid, which is why the map shows sampled zones rather than filled administrative polygons. Sub-district (tambon) is the finest level at which drought and soil moisture return data.

Composite score

The score weights burnt-area share of the last 365 days at 55%, drought recurrence over 2018–2023 at 30%, and soil moisture class at 15%. Burnt area is the one input every zone needs to be scored at all; where drought recurrence and/or soil moisture are unavailable for a zone (common — see "Stated limits"), the remaining weights are renormalized rather than withholding the score entirely, and the zone is flagged as partial coverage. A zone only carries no score when even burnt area returns nothing for that point.

Stated limits

  • GISTDA exposes burnt area on a rolling 365-day window only. There is no multi-year fire history at launch, so the fire trend accumulates one data point per season from now on. Zones added this year show "first season tracked".
  • Drought recurrence is the only genuine multi-year depth available today.
  • Burnt area is a proxy for exposure, not a measurement of the PM2.5 a resident breathes. Wind, elevation and valley geometry move smoke far from where it is produced.
  • Some zones return "not found" for drought recurrence — about 46% of tambons nationwide (385 of 832) as of the 2026-08-12 pipeline run. Coverage is reported per zone, never smoothed over.
  • All 832 tambons across the 9 target provinces carry real values from the batch pipeline (GISTDA point-grid sampling per official tambon boundary), last run 2026-08-12.
